Altered States Are Not What You Think

On consciousness, breathwork and what lies beneath the surface

I've been facilitating breathwork for eight years. Before that, I spent years studying Kundalini Yoga, transpersonal psychology, and the mechanics of lucid dreaming — all different doorways into the same territory: the vast, largely unexplored interior of human consciousness.

What I've found, consistently, is that people arrive with a fixed idea of what they are. They have a story about their capacity for feeling, for openness, for change. Breathwork has a way of making that story temporarily irrelevant.

"You don't need to go anywhere. The depth is already there. Breathwork is simply the key."

An altered state doesn't mean losing control. It doesn't mean hallucinating or disappearing. It means shifting the baseline — moving from the ordinary, defended, slightly contracted state most of us inhabit by default into something more spacious. More honest. More alive.

The breath is the mechanism because it's the bridge between the voluntary and the involuntary nervous system. Change the breath and you change the chemistry. Change the chemistry and the mind — which is not separate from the body — begins to reorganise itself. Old patterns surface. Held emotions find a way out. The body, given the right conditions, knows exactly what it needs to release.

I've held workshops at festivals, businesses, retreats and ceremonies across the country. The people who arrive are as varied as you'd expect — sceptics, seekers, people who've tried everything and people who've tried nothing. What they share, almost without exception, is a surprise at what they find. Not at what the breathwork does to them, but at what was already there, waiting.

At The Shift, we hold the breathwork session as one of the centrepieces of the day — not as a warm-up or an add-on, but as a genuine journey in its own right. We create the conditions: the setting, the sound, the safety. What happens inside that container is yours.

Sound Baths: One Practice, Many Voices

From ancient-sounding light language to a more therapeutic approach, no two sound baths are quite the same. But for me, they all offer something incredibly special: the feeling of being held.

The Inner Critic Is Shouting

Last week I wrote to a friend: "The inner critic is shouting, accelerating a big dose of imposter syndrome." It was one of those sentences you type without really thinking about it. And then afterwards I thought: actually, that's exactly what is happening.
