I Didn't Realise I Was Burning Out

A letter from Clare

I want to start by saying that I didn't recognise it. That's the thing nobody tells you about burnout — it doesn't announce itself. It creeps in slowly, disguised as busyness, as ambition, as just getting on with it. By the time I understood what was happening, I'd been living inside it for years.

I was running a business, raising a family, trying to be present for everyone and everything. I was good at it, on the surface. I showed up. I delivered. I smiled at the right moments. But underneath, something was quietly emptying out.

The first sign, looking back, was that I stopped enjoying things I used to love. Not dramatically — I didn't wake up one day unable to get out of bed. It was subtler than that. A walk that used to restore me started to feel like another thing to get through. A conversation with a friend I'd been looking forward to left me feeling more depleted than before. The things that were supposed to fill me up had stopped working.

"I thought I was just tired. It took a long time to understand that tired and burnt out are not the same thing."

I told myself I was just tired. I told myself everyone felt like this. I told myself the answer was to push through, to get to the other side of the busy period, and then everything would feel different.

It didn't.

What changed things was a weekend away — not a wellness retreat, just a few days with nothing scheduled. I remember sitting beside a lake on the second morning, coffee in hand, and noticing that I felt something I hadn't felt in a long time. Not happy, exactly. Just present. Just here. Just breathing.

That moment is, in many ways, where The Shift began. Not as a business idea, but as a question: what if more people could feel this? What if we could create the conditions for it deliberately, rather than waiting until the wheels come off?

I share this not because I have it all figured out now — I don't. But because I know I'm not the only one who spent years not recognising what was happening. And if something here helps you name what you're carrying, then it's worth saying.

With love,

Clare

Sound Baths: One Practice, Many Voices

From ancient-sounding light language to a more therapeutic approach, no two sound baths are quite the same. But for me, they all offer something incredibly special: the feeling of being held.

The Inner Critic Is Shouting

Last week I wrote to a friend: "The inner critic is shouting, accelerating a big dose of imposter syndrome." It was one of those sentences you type without really thinking about it. And then afterwards I thought: actually, that's exactly what is happening.
